Coober Pedy

Coober Pedy is a strange place located near midway between Uluru and Adelaide.

That is an opal mining vacuum truck. It is used to suck soil, sift it and discard what is not wanted. The result is mounds such as those below.

This place is in the middle of nowhere. It gets so hot that people build businesses, homes, and hotels underground. It takes a special kind of person to live in Coober Pedy.
