A local Belgium train with 10 stops delivers us to Essen. We are sadly misinformed. A mass of people exiting the train are not destined for the beer festival but for a cycling competition. After four false starts and a lot of unnecessary walking in blustery weather, we make our way to the festival and find ourselves about 25th in line with over an hour before the doors open. By the time the doors open the line reaches around the block.
We are eventually joined by Dennis and Kathy who make the event more enjoyable since we can split beer tastings four ways and sample more beers.
This event is well worth the trip.
