Avignon

Avignon is alive with Christmas. The largest Christmas market in the city is adjacent to the Palais des Papes. Lunch is a baguette filled with ham and hot raclette cheese. Avignon is a beautiful city of old churches, narrow winding streets, courtyards and sidewalk cafés. In one church is an impressive crèche display.  One small section is shown. We find Les Halles closed.

The magnificent Palais des Papes is toured. One time fortress and palace, the papal residence was the seat of the Catholic Church during the 14th century and was home to six popes.

Following a walk on the Pont d'Avignon, we stroll the city and markets at dusk before returning home.
