First signs of spring

There are more signs of spring showing up in the park and on the streets around our house. Rose plants are full of buds about to burst forward. Not long before I'll be posting our nearby roses and then we'll be off to the Botanic Gardens for the early blooms.

Don't liquor shop after Happy Hour

What happens if you drop into two liquor stores after Friday evening Happy Hour with the lads. It is a bad idea for sure. Puts some severe hurt on your pocketbook.

At the first shop, we were rushing to make the second before closing. Three guys, expensive craft beers, and a trunk load later, we'd probably spent more in less time than they had seen in a long time.

Strangler Fig

On CJ's circumnavigation ride, while passing through the Adelaide Botanic Park, not to be confused with the adjacent Adelaide Botanic Gardens, there is a group of massive strangler figs. They are in the Botanic Gardens as well. Check out the base on the tree middle-right. It is huge. They make riding this sidewalk difficult in a skinny wheel road bike. The strangler roots have buckled the pavement in many places.

Today's ride was along the north side of the river where CJ paused for a brief drink break and to take a picture of from left to right: the yet to open SkyCity hotel & casino, Adelaide Railway Station & casino (forground), Stamford Hotel (background), Hotel Intercontinental, Adelaide Convention Centre.

Spaghetti in White Clam Sauce

I cannot remember the last time Carol made spaghetti in white clam sauce. Having spied lovely baby clams, she was moved to give it a go.

The first evening we paired it with a lovely local sparking clean skin (a good bubbly we know at half price because it is unlabeled.) The second evening paired with a Barossa Riesling.
She hasn't lost her touch. Delicious

Bins - Part 3

I post about bins because I can; and it is presently the neighborhood's entertainment. The trucks pass by to empty the bins in the afternoon. In the days before the run of bin pinching, we'd pay no attention to them and retrieve them when we returned from somewhere or whenever the spirit moved us.

These days a consortium of neighbors keeps a keen eye for the truck and we're out to retrieve the bins immediately as James is doing here.
Safely nestled in their home. For this week!
This should be the last of the posts on bins.  Should be.

Adelaide Zoo - Part 1

It does not seem possible that in the three years we lived in Adelaide and in the nearly year of vacations we spent here we never visited the Adelaide Zoo until now. We have joined as members since by a third visit, the membership is paid; and it includes the Minardo Zoo and other facilities. We intend to visit Minardo where they have just had a baby rhino born.

Obe-wan orangatan was a hoot. It came down the hill with this sheet over it looking like a creature from Star Wars. It threw it off, climbed a set of stairs and tried to get the attention of an attendant. When it failed, it walked back up the hill, putting the sheet back on.

The tiger is magnificent.
There is an enclosure with a male and a female lion. We were treated when the male woke and walked about.
Can't recall what this is.
Very pretty birds but some are from South America.
These fellows were running along an overhead raceway. The one in the front has a baby on its back.
Isn't he just the cutest?
And the star of the show are the two Giant Pandas.

Adelaide Zoo - Flowers

In addition to the animals, zoo staff do a fantastic job keeping the gardens looking nice.

Gorgeous Bird of Paradise. They are plentiful around Adelaide.

Front Patio

When we lived here the first time, the cornerstone and only feature of the entrance patio other than the permanent plantings, was a huge Balinese gong. When we were repatriated to the US, we moved it to Dave and Kathy's country property. Eventually weather took its toll and the gong collapsed and was given an honored farewell.
We had a clothes dryer when last we lived here. Now we use the elements like the locals.

Decorating the entrance foyer is taking a different route this time. First Bronwyn delivers a small table and four chairs. Next she brings a small planter for Carol's herb garden.

James and Jackie offer three pots they used to hide a replanting project on their entrance foyer. Two are now on the patio and the third is on the second floor balcony.

When Bronwyn delivers another two huge planters, Carol has a project to fill them.

Returning home from the nearby market, she asked a woman where she got her plants. There is a sale in the gardens of a historic building. There is a community garden. Folks pay for membership. Our neighbor Sia, is one of the organizers.

From time to time they sell off  excess plants. Trolley in hand Carol goes and returns with a large plant. A while later, Sia's husband and one of CJ's cricket buddies. delivers the rest of the order.

CJ has returned from a long bike ride. Carol has been planting for hours. We have chairs on the entrance patio. We call it a day and have a drink. During the more than two years we lived here, we never sat and had a drink on this patio. We always used the roof. This is a first. Drinks in the foyer will be repeated.

The large plants in a pot behind Carol and behind CJ are the two given to us by James and Jackie.
We'll post again when she finishes.

Saturday Biking in the Parklands

When biking the trails of the parklands on a Saturday, one is struck by the diversity of sport and use of the parklands for sport. Prior to these pictures, we'd already passed cricket, soccer, lawn bowling, more soccer and croquet.

This is an enclosed artificial turf field hockey court. On this day, these men have installed tennis nets and have two courts going.

In the next park, this is a strange complex. Inside of this fence is a tennis court and basketball goals and court markings. A small group of men are playing a doubles tournament while some kid is shooting hoops with his ball often interrupting the game. What is crazy is that there is an adjacent basketball court but guys are playing a game on it. You'd think the kid would be less selfish.....Sorry lost my head for a second.
The next field I come across is a full size field hockey facility with the girl's teams having a go.
Farther along the track, coming up on Veale Gardens, there is a wedding taking place. The park is known for weddings and wedding picture venues. Veale Gardens remains in winter hibernation. Within weeks, or a month, the area in the second picture will be beautiful with flowers.
