When we visit in the summer, there is the Australian Tennis Open coming from Melbourne, International Cricket at Adelaide Oval and the Tour Down Under raced through the streets of Adelaide and across the roads and hills of South Australia. Arriving in February we had no expectations of sporting events. We were wrong.
In the matter of a short three weeks, CJ attended three international sporting events.
He attended the Australian Women’s Golf Open. The international star golfers we watch on TV, even back in the US, are assembled at Royal Adelaide Golf Club’s outstanding course. As part of lessons he took when we lived here, CJ has played parts of the course. Because it is a private club he’s never played a complete round.
Royal Adelaide has amazing putting greens and pitch practice areas. He’s able to watch the warm-ups of the late starters. On the driving range, he gets his first look at the length of their drives. It’s very embarrassing to us old duffers; a most humbling experience.
Unlike US PGA events, search as he might for ticket windows, there are none. This event is open to the public. He’s still searching when he realizes he’s at the first tee watching the next pair begin their round.
The second he attends is the Women’s T20 World Cup warm-up matches. They are being conducted at the Karen Rolton Oval located in the west parklands. It’s only a few blocks up the street from our apartment. More about this cricket event in a separate blog.
The final international event was Davis Cup tennis. The qualifier was between Australia and Brazil with the winner moving on to the Davis Cup finals in Madrid later this year; maybe. We attended the two singles matches on Friday. Australia won both taking a commanding lead. We watched the doubles and reverse singles on TV. Australia won 3 matches to 1. As it’s a very short walk, we can see the venue from our apartment.
