Ex-Clipsal 500, now Superloops 500

The 2020 Superloops 500 event occurs in the middle of the Adelaide Arts season.  It is held from Thursday, 20 February to Sunday, 23 February. It is the season opening event in the eleven event Virgin Australia V8 Supercars race series.

It is a four-day event and in addition to the Virgin Australia V8 SuperCars includes Touring Car Masters (older V8s), TransAm, Porsche Carrera, Stadium Supertrucks, and Dunlop Super 2 Series (junior Supercar series). Additionally, they have demonstrations of vehicles including Army vehicles, Formula 1, and others.

The Adelaide 500 (known for sponsorship reasons as the Superloop Adelaide 500) is an annual motor racing event for Supercars, held on the streets of the east end of Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. It was previously known by its longtime former name as the Clipsal 500 Adelaide or colloquially as "Clipsal", after the sponsor, Clipsal. First held in 1999, the event uses a shortened form of the Adelaide Street Circuit, the former Australian Grand Prix track.

When CJ worked in Adelaide, it was conducted on the streets of the city two blocks from our home. Our home was located on the map at K-6/ Carol hated the noise and the disruption in both parklands and life the race brought.  It takes more than three months to build the venue and another two to tear it down.  Traffic is disrupted for a week.

Our neighbors, James and Jackie, retreat to their country home when the race is on.

It generally takes place in February and March, contributing to what locals term "mad March", along with the Adelaide Festival, Adelaide Fringe, WOMADelaide and Adelaide Writers' Week.

When we were at Akmal’s Fringe show, he asked the audience if anyone had attended the race.  The man who raised his hand will forever regret it. His “Superloops” segment was hilarious.  Unfortunately for the volunteer, being labeled and called out as a bogun the attention lasted throughout all his bits.

According to Akmal, what was the city of Adelaide thinking? They have the second largest and ever-growing arts festival in the world and in the middle of it, open us the city to a hundred thousand boguns (rednecks); a town whose hotels and restaurants are already overflowing to capacity.  What can possibly go wrong?  The way he weaves this concept is hilarious. He even notes that his show pauses during race week so he can get out of town.

In the day when we lived in the neighborhood, CJ attended with a friend of a friend two years running.  He could watch on TV and when the race he wanted to watch began their warm-ups, he’d leave home and walk to his seats at the Chicane, Turn 2.  We lived close enough for him to be comfortably in his seat by the start of the race, fifteen minutes later.

Two boguns attending the race ten years ago in 2010.  Can it be that long?
Our apartment is now on the opposite end of the CBD so it no longer bothers us.  Even though one end of the circuit is only a block from the major Gluttony venue, the Fringe events are conducted in the evening long after the racing is complete for the day. Perhaps the race fans and arts fans don’t mix.
