Churchill - Day 1

We take a charter aircraft from Winnipeg to Churchill. It is a Boeing 737-200. CJ misidentified the aircraft as an Embraer 190 since he didn't think planes with those engines still existed. Let's hope this antique can safely fly us up north.

We never see our luggage from the time we turn it over in Winnipeg to the time we return to the hotel room late on the first day.

We are off on our Polar Bear experience with Frontier's North.

We pick up our tour bus at the airport. Welcome to Churchill, Manatoba, Canada....AY!

47 minutes into our Churchill experience and we see our first polar bear!

At one point the bear climbs on the top of a field of 55-gallon drums. Smile for the picture!
Our guide declares success for the week. Polar bear seen!

It is a very busy day. On the way from the airport we pass by the polar bear holding facility (jail). Bad polar bears, defined as those found wandering about in what serves as downtown metropolitan (I am exaggerating for sure) Churchill are remanded into custody, given 30 days, and upon serving their sentence either released onto the ice or in the absence of ice given a Government paid helicopter ride to a distant land far from Churchill.
This is the way they transport the sedated bears to the ice.

We visit a museum and a polar bear welfare organization. and go mushing with sled dogs.

Once upon a time a plane carrying supplies up north, Miss Piggy, crashed. No one was killed but it messed up the food supply for a few months.
There are these danger signs everywhere.

The van we're using.

After a talk at Polar Bears International, we visit a museum for another talk on local customs and culture.
