We begin day a few blocks from the hotel at Taipei 101, the tallest building in Taiwan and for many years the tallest building in the world.
We take the elevator to the top. A chart in the elevator shows your progress and the speed, this being one of the fastest elevators in the world at 600 meters/minute.Tall building such as this have dampers to keep them stable during earthquakes. This is one of the few buildings with a visible damper. It is a gigantic mass which swing counter to forces whenever the building sways.As with buildings this tall, the view from the top is magnificent. The corkscrew building is one of the highest rents in Taipei.
Next stop is the Chaing Kai Chek Memorial.We witness the changing of the guard. It is similar to the one at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington.We dine at one of the best dumpling restaurants.After dinner we walk one of Taipei's famous night markets.Exiting the market street, we find a street of animal shops. Animals for sale, dog and cat food stores, and all still open.
