The Golden Triangle is where Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, and Laos meet. The shuttle and guide take us to the border crossing to Burma first. Tachileik, is a border town in the Shan State of eastern Burma.
A tuk tuk takes us to the market where Anan describes the various foods. The highlight or lowlight depending on your point of view is the "Thousand Year's Old Egg". Its a fermented egg that is black. When their shells are cleaned they are painted pink to ensure recognition.
These are very young Buddhist monks; teens and pre-teens. Robes are red in Burma and orange in Thailand. We follow them from prayer to lunch.
The first stop after returning to Thailand and having a picnic lunch is a temple stop in Chiang Saen to visit a pagoda built in 1291and to view huge teak trees.
We have a choice of another bumpy speedboat transfer or a covered and more civilized longboat. The covered boat delivers us to Laos where following a quick pass around the market we return to the resort.
While returning from the pool our path is blocked by the return of Lynchee and her mahout, Pong. Yesterday Carol wore a fancy wrap to the pool, today a bathrobe. After a cooling dip in the warm pool and another elephant encounter, we enjoy a pre-dinner drink on our patio.
There are two restaurants. One is the air-conditioned and Italian and the other is the outdoor and is Thai. For the second evening we have the huge Thai restaurant to ourselves. The fried "pumpkin" is excellent.
Fried pumpkin is actually a form of squash |
During dinner some people set off a Thai lantern. After a long chat with our waiter (he has nothing else to do), this magnificent mango sticky rice desert with coconut ice cream concludes the evening.
